Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer (1964)
When Rudolph first aired, his meeting with Hermie the elf was a commiseration, summed up by the
song "We're a couple of misfits". However an executive at General Electric found the song a little depressing, and thought something more uplifting was in order. So when Rudolph's second showing came around in 1965, it received a new song -"Fame and Fortune". Now, after more than thirty years, things have been put back the way they were supposed to... much to the chagrin, I imagine, of all of us who grew up remembering the New/Old version and missed the Old/New version. Or something.
One last bit of tid - Billy Mae Richards, who voiced Rudolph, continued to be the voice of Rudolph through three specials and fifteen years. Eventually she replaced Rudolph with "Tender Heart Bear"of the "Care Bears" in the mid 1980's. In 1997, she actually acted in "Melanie Darrow", playing mother to Delta Burke's title character. (If I were you, I wouldn't rent it just for that...)
Recently, Rudolph received a facelift. Old footage was restored, the color was cleaned up, an entire song was restored, and another was entirely excised. Consider it a revision of revision. |
